Later, international evaluations TIMSS and PISA showed a sharp improvement in all areas, namely literacy, from 2011/2012 to 2015, Portuguese students results raised to above OECD and IEA averages, attaining the best results ever for Portugal. A few analysts[65] explain these advances by some of the educational measures then put in place: the development of more demanding curricula, the emphasis on direct teaching, and explicit fluency training in reading and mathematics.
Emak2 itu suka dilema, dan kadang mengambil keputusan buruk karena tidak mau ambil resiko. Contoh nih kalo liat kerjaan rumah yang numpuk belum lagi berantakan dimana2, eh tiba2 anak2 mau bantuin tuh bikin dilema banget. Gimana ngga? Klo anak2 ikut bantuin mereka bisa sekalian belajar tp nantinya bukannya cepet selesai malah tambah lama dan kurang oke hasilnya. Padahal perbuatan semacam itu, bikin anak2 malah akhirnya malas membantu. Karena sering dilarang sih.
The review does address the question of why children's reading and writing (especially for boys) have not been meeting expectations. Paragraph 3.25 of the Final Report states "This suggests that it is far more often the nature of the teaching than the nature of the child which determines success or failure in learning the 'basic' skills of reading and writing. This is not to say, however, that there is any lack of willingness or capability on the part of primary teachers to develop the required expertise in the teaching of beginner readers once convinced of the benefits to children of doing so. Rather, the main obstacles have been long-standing systemic confusion and conflicting views, especially about the teaching of phonics.[36] As more research and practice now converge in strong support of high-quality, systematic phonic work, schools can be confident that their investment in good-quality phonics training for teachers and in good systematic phonic programmes, whether commercial or provided by the National Strategies, will yield high returns for children."[37]
Phonemic awareness involves the understanding of the relationship between sounds and words. It explains how words are made of sounds that can be used, like reusable building blocks, to construct words (h + at = hat, f + at = fat, etc). Phonics goes one step further by connecting those sounds to written symbols. It involves learning how letters or letter groups represent unique sounds, and how those sounds are blended to form a word.

Reading Rockets is a national multimedia project that offers a wealth of research-based reading strategies, lessons, and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better. Our reading resources assist parents, teachers, and other educators in helping struggling readers build fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
In 1996 the California Department of Education took an increased interest in using phonics in schools.[26] And in 1997 the department called for grade one teaching in concepts about print, phonemic awareness, decoding and word recognition, and vocabulary and concept development. [27] Then, in 2014 the Department stated "Ensuring that children know how to decode regularly spelled one-syllable words by mid-first grade is crucial". It goes on to say that "Learners need to be phonemically aware (especially able to segment and blend phonemes)".[28] In grades two and three children receive explicit instruction in advanced phonic-analysis and reading multi-syllabic and more complex words.[29]
Figure 1: Design of “Bijak Membaca” Figure 2 depicts the contents of the interactive multimedia application that applies learning strategies which are the Phonic Reading Technique and Multisensory Approach. Figure 2. Adaptation of Learning Strategies Researchers incorporate the first module with the Phonic Reading Technique, which involves letters, syllables, words, and sentences. Dyslexics have a few critical letters that they are confused with. These critical letters are b, d, m, n, p, q, u, and w [20]. Dyslexics are usually confused with small letters, and therefore a decision is made to integrate a letter with a picture to ensure that they recognize the letter. In the example of the interface design shown in Figure 3, each letter is provided with the letter-sound using the Phonic Reading Technique and embedded with video that shows the pronunciation technique. By using a pointing device, dyslexics can just move over the lettered object to hear the phonic pronunciation. Besides that, the embedded video of each letter can be repetitively played to practice the pronunciation technique. In some ways, it shows that the Multisensory Approach is also applied with the linking of eyes, ears, voice, and hand movements [6]. Figure 3. Letter-sound using Phonic Reading technique interface design As stated earlier in this section, there are three different types of exercises that apply the Multisensory Approach in the “Aktiviti” Module. Firstly, pronouncing activity page (“Latihan Sebut”), helps the user to differentiate the correct pronunciation of each critical letter. Figure 4 shows the interface designs of different categories in “Latihan Sebut”, which are letter, syllable, and sentence. The user has to click on the letter and it navigates to the next screen with the presence of sound. By doing this activity, dyslexics link their sensory organs such as eyes, ears, and hand movements interactively. The reason for developing this page is because dyslexics have problems with reading and recognizing letters. Figure 4. Interface Designs of “Sebut” Activity Secondly, drag and drop activity is chosen to give different interaction styles to dyslexics. The user needs to pick any letter provided and drag it to a correct place, based on the given picture (Figure 5). Besides drag and drop, the user can also click on the syllables to complete the task. These exercises are implemented by adapting the Multisensory Approach as the user needs to synchronize his hand movements by dragging the object to targeted areas with the coordination of his eyes. 2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science & Engineering Research (CHUSER 2012), December 3-4, 2012, Kota Kinabalu,Sabah, Malaysia556

In the articles below, you will get answers to these questions and more. You will learn the facts about phonics, why learning phonics is important for your child, how to tell if your child’s teacher includes phonics in his beginning reading program and what the most recent research on phonics says. You can also test your own phonics knowledge with our phonics quiz and explore further resources on phonics.
Phonics instruction must be informed by our ongoing observation and assessment of children’s phonics knowledge and word-reading skills. We should respond when we notice that a child is confused, is insecure with a particular skill, or has had a major breakthrough. If we are not responsive to our students, some students are likely to be left behind in their word-reading development.
Short vowels are the five single letter vowels, a, e, i, o, and u, when they produce the sounds /æ/ as in cat, /ɛ/ as in bet, /ɪ/ as in sit, /ɒ/ or /ɑ/ as in hot, and /ʌ/ as in cup. The term "short vowel" is historical, and meant that at one time (in Middle English) these vowels were pronounced for a particularly short period of time; currently, it means just that they are not diphthongs like the long vowels.

Some educators feel there are words that do not follow these phonics rules, such as were, who, and you.[12] They are often called "sight words" because they are memorized by sight with the whole language approach. These words should not be placed on a Word Wall to avoid confusion for a student learning beginning sounds. However, teachers of Synthetic phonics believe that most words are decodable and do not need to be memorized. For example, they point out that the word "were" is decodable because it contains two sounds, /w/-/er/. It is only necessary for the student to learn the various ways of spelling the sounds.[13]

In point of fact, letter-sound information amalgamates the word’s units into memory better than any other process. When we teach high-frequency words, we need to fully analyze the letter-sound relationships within them, whether the word is comprised of expected letter-sound relationships, as in can (/k/, /a/, and /n/, just as we would expect); some expected and some unexpected letter-sound relationships, as in said (/s/ and /d/ are as expected, /ai/ would normally represent the long a, not the short e, sound); or entirely unexpected letter-sound relationships, such as of (/uv/). Nearly two-thirds of high-frequency words are actually very regular (e.g., at, in, it), but even with those that are not, we need to fully analyze the letter-sound relationships as well as read them accurately many times. We suggest studying each letter’s association with each sound, relating the word to other words with the same letter-sound patterns when possible (e.g., no, go, so), and teaching high-frequency words alongside meaningful words (e.g., like with bike).

You can teach phonics in many different ways. You can use word or picture cards, magnetic letters, letter tiles, games, or even more traditional methods. However, if you want phonics instruction to be effective, you need to know the content (e.g., consonants, short vowels, digraphs) that you are teaching and the order in which children typically learn, and thus that you will teach, that content. We call this a scope and sequence.8 Across decades, evidence has accumulated to suggest that systematic phonics instruction with a scope and sequence will produce better outcomes than instruction that does not follow a scope and sequence.9

Around 5% of English speakers have a significant problem with learning to read words. Poor word readers are often trained to use letter‐sound rules to improve their reading skills. This training is commonly called phonics. Well over 100 studies have administered some form of phonics training to poor word readers. However, there are surprisingly few systematic reviews or meta‐analyses of these studies. The most well‐known review was done by the National Reading Panel (Ehri 2001) 12 years ago and needs updating. The most recent review (Suggate 2010) focused solely on children and did not include unpublished studies.

English has absorbed many words from other languages throughout its history, usually without changing the spelling of those words. As a result, the written form of English includes the spelling patterns of many languages (Old English, Old Norse, Norman French, Classical Latin and Greek, as well as numerous modern languages) superimposed upon one another.[7] These overlapping spelling patterns mean that in many cases the same sound can be spelled differently and the same spelling can represent different sounds. However, the spelling patterns usually follow certain conventions.[8] In addition, the Great Vowel Shift, a historical linguistic process in which the quality of many vowels in English changed while the spelling remained as it was, greatly diminished the transparency of English spelling in relation to pronunciation.

Meskipun dana beasiswa mepet, tidak sedikit pelajar Indonesia yang memboyong keluarganya ke Perth. Bagi saya, kesempatan memperoleh pendidikan di luar negeri pada usia dini sama pentingnya dengan studi S3. Masa depan anak-anak tetaplah hal yang terpenting dalam keluarga, dan banyak teman-teman pelajar yang memaksa diri untuk belajar sekaligus bekerja supaya hal ini terwujud. It’s worth it, InsyaAllah!
Some people think that teaching letter names is essentially teaching their sounds, but unfortunately that is not the case in English. Some letter names don’t have a sound commonly associated with the letter at all. Neither Hh, Ww, nor Yy has its commonly associated sound in its name (e.g., there is no /h/, as in happy, in the name of the letter Hh (“aych”)). Knowing these letters’ names definitely does not lead children to know their associated sounds. Some other letters’ names contain one of the sounds commonly associated with the name but not the other. For example, Cc has one of its common sounds in its name (/s/) but not the other (/k/).

Yaitu : 1. Setelah anak hafal semua suku kata, maka ajari dia teknik membaca yaitu dg menjejerkan kartu. Jadi, SALAH BESAR jika meyakini anak yg telah mengetahui suku kata akan otomatis tahu cara membacanya. Teknik membaca bisa diajarkan melalui teknik jejer kartu. Dimulai dg yg mudah dulu (2 kartu), lalu meningkat menjadi 3 kartu (membentuk kalimat). 2. Setelah anak mahir membaca dg teknik jejer kartu, baru kenalkan buku.
