Later, international evaluations TIMSS and PISA showed a sharp improvement in all areas, namely literacy, from 2011/2012 to 2015, Portuguese students results raised to above OECD and IEA averages, attaining the best results ever for Portugal. A few analysts[65] explain these advances by some of the educational measures then put in place: the development of more demanding curricula, the emphasis on direct teaching, and explicit fluency training in reading and mathematics.

Mengembangkan minat olahraga.
Kim Burnim: Actually the first step is just learning the names of the letters of the alphabet—research has shown that when children know the names of the letters, they are better able to learn about the sounds that the letters represent. It’s always a good idea to start with the letters in the child’s name, because this makes the learning more meaningful. For example, you can pick a letter from your child’s name and help him or her circle it each time it is found on one page of a magazine. Or you can help your child find the letters of his or her name in an alphabet book. You can also help your child make letters of their name with playdough, or use finger paint or sand in a sandbox to practice writing the letters.
Kim Burnim: Of course. The letter c, for example, sometimes stands for the same sound as the letter k, as in the word “cat,” and sometimes stands for the same sound as the letter s, as in the word “city.” The most common sound for the letter c is the “k” sound, so that’s what we teach children first. Another example is the letter a—sometimes it represents the short a sound, as in the word “cap,” and sometimes it represents the long a sound, as in the word cape. We usually teach the short a sound first, because that’s more common, and then teach the long a sound later on.
The complexities of letter names in English might lead you to think we should not teach letter names at all, but research suggests that teaching letter names is still worthwhile7—it just needs to be accompanied by lots of attention to the sound or sounds commonly associated with each letter and by a thorough understanding of the challenges posed by English letter names. A teacher with such knowledge would understand, for example, why a young child might spell the word daisy as WAZ. Why? Sometimes children write “W” for the /d/ sound because the letter name for Ww—“double-u”—begins with the /d/ sound. The next sound we hear in daisy is the letter name for Aa (the long a sound), and the third and fourth sounds in daisy are the name of the letter Zz (“zee”).

The letter c, for example, sometimes stands for the same sound as the letter k, as in the word “cat,” and sometimes stands for the same sound as the letter s, as in the word “city.” The most common sound for the letter c is the “k” sound, so that’s what we teach children first. Historically, a range of less systematic approaches have been popular. Typically, these approaches do not have a clear scope or follow a sequence but instead address letter sounds only as they arise incidentally in interactions with children or are needed to read words within a specific text. So, if a teacher is reading the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, she will teach the ee sound because it is found in the word see. The problem with this kind of serendipitous approach as the driver of phonics instruction is that information is not presented logically to the child and information gets missed. Of course, children should read connected text as they are learning phonics, and teachers should point out words they are reading that match taught patterns. But the scope and sequence of phonics instruction should not be based primarily on opportune moments in text reading.
Figure 5. Drag and Drop Activity Lastly, the reading activity is designed to enforce the Phonic Reading Technique with the application of the Multisensory Approach. Children need to read the given passage and be guided with pre-recorded voice using the correct Phonic Reading Technique. Users have to link their voice, ears, and eyes to perform this activity. IV. RESULT & FINDING In order to evaluate the interface design and usability aspect of the application, Hueristic Evaluation is conducted. Heuristic Evaluation is an informal usability analysis and it is recommended to be done with between three and five evaluators to view the interface design and give their comments [21]. The evaluators should be experts in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and other similar project areas. For this study, this evaluation is performed by multimedia lecturers from the Computer Science Department and IT undergraduates who are pursuing a course in HCI (Multimedia). The reason of choosing those students as evaluators is to acquire their feedbacks and comments based on their theoretical and practical knowledge in HCI.Their task is to look into the adaptation of learning strategies and multimedia content in “Bijak Membaca”. They are given a set of questionnaires that consists of five sections. The criteria that need to be evaluated are i) content and structure (adaptation of phonic reading and Multisensory Approach), ii) interface design, sound, navigation (multimedia elements), and iii) general feedback about the application. The scale used is from 1 to 5. Table 1 shows the scale with the description that is included in the questionnaires. TABLE 1: RANK OF ANSWERS Rank Value Strongly Agree 5 Agree 4 Neutral 3 Disagree 2 Strongly Disagree 1 Figure 6 shows the result of the Heuristic Evaluation based on the content and feedback on structure. The result shows that most of the evaluators agree that this application is well designed with understandable content (mean=4.67) and reading technique (mean= 4.5), and suitable multisensory activities (mean=4.83). Figure 6. Result of Heuristic Evaluation on Content and Structure Based on the feedback shown in Figure 7, multimedia elements are designed and integrated very well as most of them agree with the interface design (mean=4.67), sound (mean=4.73), and navigation (mean=4.1) of the application. Figure 7. Result of Heuristic Evaluation on Multimedia Interactivity General feedback results (refer to Figure 8) obtained from this evaluation show that “Bijak Membaca” is accepted as an interesting (mean=4.33), user-friendly (mean=4.00), and attractive (mean=4.33) tool. It is also evaluated as valuable (mean=4.67) and supportive (mean=4.67). 2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science & Engineering Research (CHUSER 2012), December 3-4, 2012, Kota Kinabalu,Sabah, Malaysia557

The result is that English spelling patterns vary considerably in the degree to which they follow rules. For example, the letters ee almost always represent /iː/, but the sound can also be represented by the letters i and y. Similarly, the letter cluster ough represents /ʌf/ as in enough, /oʊ/ as in though, /uː/ as in through, /ɒf/ as in cough, /aʊ/ as in bough, /ɔː/ as in bought, and /ʌp/ as in hiccough, while in slough and lough, the pronunciation varies.
Analogy phonics is a particular type of analytic phonics in which the teacher has students analyze phonic elements according to the phonogrammes in the word. A phonogramme, known in linguistics as a rime, is composed of the vowel and all the sounds that follow it in the syllable. Teachers using the analogy method assist students in memorising a bank of phonogrammes, such as -at or -am. Teachers may use learning "word families" when teaching about phonogrammes. Students then use these phonogrammes.
corresponding sounds. Compared to the Syllable Spelling Technique, in phonic reading children just need to remember 26 letters (a – z) and its sound [9]. There are two different categories of phonemes, vowels (a, e, i, o, u) with different pronunciations of “e” known as “e pepet”(/e) and “e taling” (/Ɲ), and also consonants (p, t, k, b, d, g, c, j, s, h, 1, r, m, n,  , ƾ , w, y/) [11]. They are not forced to remember all the different syllables that definitely will put some burden on the children, especially dyslexics. For example, in the Malay language ‘a’ is pronounced as “aaa” and ‘b’ is pronounced as “beh”. Combinations of these letters is called a syllable and pronounced as “beh - aaa - ba”. Previous researches show that the Phonic Reading Technique that emphasizes on letter-sound, is proven to improve reading skill [10] [12]. B. Multisensory Approach There are two ways to teach dyslexics, either by using the traditional teaching approach or Multisensory Teaching Approach. The traditional method is not effective for dyslexic children [13] as they need to stay focused on the information that is being given to them [7]. Unable to stay focused for long durations [2] and having short term memory problems [7][13] are major contributors to the ineffectiveness of traditional methods. A better approach to teach dyslexics is by applying the Multisensory Method in the teaching and learning process by teachers [7] as it consists of strings of multisensory strategies (linking of eyes, ears, voice, and hand movements) [6]. The Multisensory Method is proven to be an effective method to teach dyslexic children as they seem to interact with teaching tools and apply extra creativity towards their learning contents [6]. The strength of the Multisensory Approach lies in its ability to attract dyslexics’ attention, as they usually have problems staying focused during the learning process [7]. C. Dyslexia People who have different categories of disabilities can be classified into a few specific groups such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxics [1][2][4]. These types of syndromes have similar problems such as difficulty in speaking, writing, language problems, arithmetic confusion [6][14][15], emotional, and behavioral disorder [1][5][4]. Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty and a disability [7][16] that is faced by a person. They show symptoms of difficulties such as in reading, writing, listening, and speaking [1][15][17], which can cause inferiority complex among dyslexics, especially children. Generally, dyslexics’ characteristics are different from one child to another and characterized by unusual balance of skills [2]. However, they are always being referred to the cluster of symptoms like having difficulties with specific learning skills, mostly reading [13]. According to related literature, this syndrome is recognized as specific learning disabilities associated to the neurological system that cover a wide range of reading difficulties, [6] but does not imply low intelligence or poor educational potential. It is shown that dyslexia is related to learning disabilities only [2]. Therefore, based on the above definitions, dyslexia can be concluded as specific learning disabilities such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening that might occur in early age. Dyslexics need support and more attention from people around them to encourage them so that they can live like other people. D. Interactive Multimedia Multimedia as an interactive application can help dyslexics to reduce their weaknesses by focusing on their limitations and also on their potentials [18]. It is more concise and clear; and helps them out from their problems. Multimedia consists of interactive elements that are usually used to attract viewers. There are several combinations of multimedia such as text, audio, video, graphic, and interactive content. It can play the role of a secondary learning tool to enhance understanding among children and interest in their learning process. Multimedia has the potential to reduce or remove most of the problems that are faced by dyslexics because it uses interactive multimedia elements such as graphics and auditory devices for development [7]. Besides, multimedia can be a teaching computer [8] because it creates a fun learning environment for dyslexics. The elements used in multimedia application such as text, color, images, audios, video, animation, and graphics can attract children to stay focused and have fun during the learning session. In addition, it is also used on the concept of teaching and understanding for dyslexics [4][19]. This may contribute to improvement in their learning process by providing extrinsic motivation for task completion and also help to increase motivation [4]. III. IMPLEMENTATION OF LEARNING STRATEGIES IN “BIJAK MEMBACA” The main focus in this section is to discuss the implementation of the reading technique and learning approach using the interactive multimedia application, “Bijak Membaca”. The design of “Bijak Membaca” is shown in Figure 1, which refers to the content of the application. Basically, “Bijak Membaca” consists of two main modules; i) “Tutorial” and ii) “Aktiviti”. In the first module, there are four sub-modules, which comprise “Huruf”, “Suku Kata”, “Perkataan”, and “Ayat”. Interactive activity is the main focus in the second module that consists of “Latihan Suai”, “Latihan Sebut”, and “Latihan Baca”. 2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science & Engineering Research (CHUSER 2012), December 3-4, 2012, Kota Kinabalu,Sabah, Malaysia555
On the other hand, there is such a thing as too much phonics instruction. We have seen prekindergarten and kindergarten classrooms in which the better part of the day is focused on letter-sound instruction (and often in a manner inconsistent with what research would recommend). This is problematic because it leaves insufficient time for many other important areas of development. For example, vocabulary and concept knowledge, which are strong predictors of long-term reading and writing success, also need attention. In fact, vocabulary knowledge affects word-reading development. We sometimes cannot even know whether we have read a word accurately unless we already have the word in our vocabulary. Is the word lemic pronounced with a short e, like lemon, or a long e, like lemur? Unless you already know this word, you aren’t sure. For children trying to learn to read words with low vocabulary knowledge, such uncertainty is common.
Sight words and high frequency words are associated with the whole language approach which usually uses embedded phonics. According to Put Reading First from the National Institute for Literacy,[11] embedded phonics is described as indirect instruction where "Children are taught letter-sound relationships during the reading of connected text. (Since children encounter different letter-sound relationships as they read, this approach is not systematic or explicit.)".
Contoh rubah lari, susu enak, gerak gerik, dll.
The spelling structures for some alphabetic languages, such as Spanish, Portuguese and specially Italian, are comparatively orthographically transparent, or orthographically shallow, because there is nearly a one-to-one correspondence between sounds and the letter patterns that represent them. English spelling is more complex, a deep orthography, partly because it attempts to represent the 40+ phonemes of the spoken language with an alphabet composed of only 26 letters (and no diacritics). As a result, two letters are often used together to represent distinct sounds, referred to as digraphs. For example, t and h placed side by side to represent either /θ/ or /ð/.

For key words to do their job, children must be able to separate the first sound in the word from the rest of the word (e.g., to separate the /b/ from the /all/ in ball). Ideally, children develop this skill, called initial phoneme segmentation, during or before the prekindergarten year. However, not all children meet this expectation. Fortunately, you can work on this skill while teaching the alphabet, including alphabet key words. Research strongly suggests that phonemic awareness (conscious awareness of the individual sounds in spoken words—for example, recognizing that sheep has three sounds: /sh/, /ee/, and /p/), although an entirely oral skill, is actually best developed with accompanying letters. This initial phoneme segmentation issue is also why you should be judicious about using alphabet key words that begin with blends (two consonant letters pronounced in succession in a syllable, such as dr in drum); it is especially difficult for young children to separate the initial phoneme in a blend.
From the alphabet song to children’s toys, much of the messaging that young children receive about letters is focused on the names of letters. Although research does suggest the importance of teaching and learning letter names, also vitally important is teaching the sounds associated with the letters. A common faux pas is neglecting instruction in those sounds throughout prekindergarten and sometimes well into kindergarten.

Around 5% of English speakers have a significant problem with learning to read words. Poor word readers are often trained to use letter‐sound rules to improve their reading skills. This training is commonly called phonics. Well over 100 studies have administered some form of phonics training to poor word readers. However, there are surprisingly few systematic reviews or meta‐analyses of these studies. The most well‐known review was done by the National Reading Panel (Ehri 2001) 12 years ago and needs updating. The most recent review (Suggate 2010) focused solely on children and did not include unpublished studies.
Phonic artinya bunyi. Setiap huruf (alfabet) memiliki bunyi masing-masing. Ibaratnya seperti ini, huruf alfabet adalah kucing, dan kucing itu punya bunyi “meong”, tidak lantas bunyinya “kucing” kan?. Cara mudah mengajari phonic kepada anak bisa dengan memperkenalkan huruf beserta bunyinya masing-masing. Contohnya huruf a bunyinya ae, huruf o bunyinya o, huruf i bunyinya i. Pada dasarnya mirip seperti belajar membaca dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Yang berbeda hanya pada huruf “c” yang dalam bahasa inggris bunyinya “keh”.

The goal of phonics is to enable beginning readers to decode new written words by sounding them out, or, in phonics terms, blending the sound-spelling patterns. Since it focuses on the spoken and written units within words, phonics is a sublexical approach and, as a result, is often contrasted with whole language, a word-level-up philosophy for teaching reading.
As well as working through the alphabet, and the sounds that each letter makes, Reading Eggs also includes lessons on phonics skills such as working with beginning and end blends of letters, the variety of sounds that vowels make, diphthongs, consonant letter sounds such as soft c, g, and y, silent letters, double letter sounds, word families, and how to work through words with more than one syllable.
Despite these different focuses, phonics instruction and phonemic awareness instruction are connected. In fact, phonemic awareness is necessary for phonics instruction to be effective. Before students can use a knowledge of sound-spelling relationships to decode written words, they must understand that words (whether written or spoken) are made up of sounds. Phonemic awareness is the understanding that a word is made up of a series of discrete sounds. Without this insight, phonics instruction will not make sense to students.
