The spelling structures for some alphabetic languages, such as Spanish, Portuguese and specially Italian, are comparatively orthographically transparent, or orthographically shallow, because there is nearly a one-to-one correspondence between sounds and the letter patterns that represent them. English spelling is more complex, a deep orthography, partly because it attempts to represent the 40+ phonemes of the spoken language with an alphabet composed of only 26 letters (and no diacritics). As a result, two letters are often used together to represent distinct sounds, referred to as digraphs. For example, t and h placed side by side to represent either /θ/ or /ð/.
The Konik is a Polish horse breed descending from very hardy horses from the Biłgoraj region. These horses had a predominantly dun colour, but also black and chestnut horses were present in the population.[4] Some researchers claim these foundation animals were hybrids with wild horse breeding that had been sold to farmers by the zoo in Zamość in 1806, which were bred to local domesticated draft horses.[4] However, genetic studies now contradict the view that the Konik is a surviving form of Eastern European wild horse, commonly called the tarpan, nor is it closely related to them. The Konik shares mitochondrial DNA with many other domesticated horse breeds and their Y-DNA is nearly identical.[5][6]

On 30 November 2004 Brendan Nelson, Minister for Education, Science and Training, established a National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy. The Inquiry examined the way reading is taught in schools, as well as the effectiveness of teacher education courses in preparing teachers for reading instruction. The first two recommendations of the Inquiry make clear the Committee's conviction about the need to base the teaching of reading on evidence and the importance of teaching systematic, explicit phonics within an integrated approach.[43]

So, I decided to figure this things out! Saya mulai baca-baca sana sini dan browsing-browsing ini itu. Alhamdulillah, akhirnya saya mendapatkan cara dan bahan yang menurut saya cukup ideal untuk dibelajarkan kepada anak-anak. Kuncinya adalah PHONICS! Inilah metoda belajar membaca bagi English Speaking children. Dengan Phonics, anak-anak diajarkan mengucapkan alfabet menurut bunyinya, misalnya ‘C’ bukan diucapkan ‘si’ tetapi ‘keh..’, ‘G’ bukan dibunyikan ‘ji’ tetapi ‘geh’.
Teachers should use picture mnemonics (Drawings of letters that are embedded in a picture with the items in each picture beginning with the sound of the letter embedded within in. Example: Itchy’s Alphabet)  Students are trained to notice the initial sounds in words along with the embedded picture mnemonics. Using pictures in which the letter can be logically or meaningfully embedded appears to be more effective than learning letters by themselves or with non-embedded keyword pictures.
Phonics training appears to be effective for improving some reading skills. Specifically, statistically significant effects were found for nonword reading accuracy (large effect), word reading accuracy (moderate effect), and letter‐sound knowledge (small‐to‐moderate effect). For several other outcomes, there were small or moderate effect sizes that did not reach statistical significance but may be meaningful: word reading fluency, spelling, phonological output, and reading comprehension. The effect for nonword reading fluency, which was measured in only one study, was in a negative direction, but this was not statistically significant.
Phonics is the relationships between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language. Children's reading development is dependent on their understanding of the alphabetic principle — the idea that letters and letter patterns represent the sounds of spoken language. Learning that there are predictable relationships between sounds and letters allows children to apply these relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words, and to begin to read with fluency.
In 1990, Congress asked the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to compile a list of available programs on beginning reading instruction, evaluating each in terms of the effectiveness of its phonics component. As part of this requirement, the ED asked Dr. Marilyn J. Adams to produce a report on the role of phonics instruction in beginning reading, which resulted in her 1994 book Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning about Print.[15] In the book, Adams asserted that existing scientific research supported that phonics is an effective method for teaching students to read at the word level. Adams argued strongly that the phonics and the whole language advocates are both right, and that phonics is an effective way to teach students the alphabetic code, building their skills in decoding unknown words. By learning the alphabetic code early, she argued, students can quickly free up mental energy they had used for word analysis and devote this mental effort to meaning, leading to stronger comprehension earlier in elementary school. Thus, she concluded, phonics instruction is a necessary component of reading instruction, but not sufficient by itself to teach children to read. This result matched the overall goal of whole language instruction and supported the use of phonics for a particular subset of reading skills, especially in the earliest stages of reading instruction. Yet the argument about how to teach reading, eventually known as "the Great Debate," continued unabated.

Once students grasp the alphabet, and know the sound each letter represents they continue on to blend these letter-sound pairings together to read a word. They can then distinguish between similar sounds (e.g. “three,” “free,” and “tree), and phonics success is just around the corner. An effective homeschool phonics curriculum will involve frequent reinforcement and review of these skills.

Although the patterns are inconsistent, when English spelling rules take into account syllable structure, phonetics, etymology and accents, there are dozens of rules that are 75% or more reliable.[9] It should be noted, however, that this level of reliability can only be achieved by extending the rules far outside the domain of phonics, which deals with letter-sound correspondences, and into the morphophonemic and morphological domains. For an estimate of the reliability of strictly phonic rules, we still cannot do much better than the 1963 study by Theodore Clymer.[10]

In point of fact, letter-sound information amalgamates the word’s units into memory better than any other process. When we teach high-frequency words, we need to fully analyze the letter-sound relationships within them, whether the word is comprised of expected letter-sound relationships, as in can (/k/, /a/, and /n/, just as we would expect); some expected and some unexpected letter-sound relationships, as in said (/s/ and /d/ are as expected, /ai/ would normally represent the long a, not the short e, sound); or entirely unexpected letter-sound relationships, such as of (/uv/). Nearly two-thirds of high-frequency words are actually very regular (e.g., at, in, it), but even with those that are not, we need to fully analyze the letter-sound relationships as well as read them accurately many times. We suggest studying each letter’s association with each sound, relating the word to other words with the same letter-sound patterns when possible (e.g., no, go, so), and teaching high-frequency words alongside meaningful words (e.g., like with bike).
Scope and sequence is also important because it helps children to organize information into cognitive categories, or “file folders,” that support better cognitive storage and retrieval of information. For example, if one teaches information without a scope and sequence, one might move from teaching the short a sound in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pattern (e.g., bag), to teaching the vowel digraph oa (e.g., boat), to teaching ch (e.g., chip), to teaching i_e (e.g., bike). It would be a lot easier to remember these patterns if they were taught in groups: for example, teaching all the short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, and u), consonant digraphs that represent unique sounds (th, sh, ch), all the CVC-e (silent e) patterns (mate, Pete, bike, note, cute), and then both of the spelling patterns that represent the /oi/ sound (called a diphthong; oy and oi). If instruction follows a scope and sequence, the variations don’t seem random but rather work to form a category (e.g., “Oh this th is kind of like the ch, two letters that make a new consonant sound”).

The whole language emphasis on identifying words using context and focusing only a little on the sounds (usually the alphabet consonants and the short vowels) could not be reconciled with the phonics emphasis on individual sound-symbol correspondences. Thus, a dichotomy between the whole language approach and phonics emerged in the United States causing intense debate. Ultimately, this debate led to a series of Congressionally-commissioned panels and government-funded reviews of the state of reading instruction in the U.S.

Semangat kerjasama.

Bijak Membaca - Applying Phonic Reading Technique and Multisensory Approach with Interactive Multimedia for Dyslexia Children Siti Zulaiha Ahmad, Nik Noor Amalina Amirah Nik Ludin, Hawa Mohd Ekhsan, Arifah Fasha Rosmani, Mohammad Hafiz Ismail Department of Computer Science Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences Universiti Teknologi MARA, 02600 Arau, Perlis sitizulaiha@perlis.uitm.edu.my Abstract— Reading difficulty is one of the major problems faced by dyslexic children. Reading skill is the most crucial ability as it is required in the upper level of discovery of knowledge. In this research, Phonic Reading Technique and Multisensory Approach are blended with interactive multimedia, which incorporates multimedia elements such as text, graphics, video, and animation. The manner of applying those techniques in “Bijak Membaca” is discussed. The contents of this application are specifically designed to visualize letters, words, sentences, and pronunciations in the Malay language for dyslexics, aged 7 – 8 years, with awareness of their characteristics. In order to evaluate the design of its content, heuristic testing is conducted among multimedia lecturers and IT undergraduates. The result reveals that the contents are well designed with the inclusion of Phonic Reading Technique, Multisensory Approach, and suitable multimedia elements. It is also concluded as interesting, user-friendly, attractive, valuable, and supportive. Keywords—Phonic reading; Multisensory Approach; Interactive multimedia; Dyslexic children; Heuristic testing I. INTRODUCTION The first step to explore the world of knowledge is by actively engaging in reading books, magazines, articles, and other materials. Unfortunately, children with learning disabilities, especially dyslexia, usually have problems in word recognition, which could hinder their ability to read [1]. They are usually hampered by slow reading speed, omission of words [2], and inaccurate reading [3]. Consequently, it causes inferiority complex, loss of confidence and focus, and frustration among these children [2]. In order to provide improved learning conditions for dyslexic children, an appropriate reading tool that attracts and captivates their attention is required to support their learning process. It is very important to motivate and integrate them in an enjoyable learning process. Therefore, dyslexic children need extra support [4] in terms of learning strategy to develop their skills in reading. There are many learning strategies and their effectiveness differs depending on the children themselves. From the previous research, it is found that by using existing teaching methods (traditional methods), teachers cannot get much success in teaching dyslexic children [5]. It is known that multimedia plays an important role in teaching children with dyslexia [4]. In this study, the Multisensory Approach and multimedia elements [6], such as video, audio, animation, graphic, and image, are used. This research concentrates on designing and developing a reading tool called “Bijak Membaca” to assist dyslexic children in the reading process. The idea is to provide a better learning strategy by applying the Phonic Reading Technique in Malay language, blended with the Multisensory Approach. These learning strategies are implemented using multimedia technology that is specifically designed for dyslexics aged 7 to 8 years. The rest of this section is organized as follows: the second section discusses the background of this study, which includes the Phonic Reading Technique, Multisensory Approach, dyslexia and multimedia. In the next section, the focus is on implementation of learning strategies in “Bijak Membaca”. The paper ends with disclosing results and findings obtained from heuristic testing. II. BACKGROUND A. Phonic Reading Technique Phonic skill is one of the learning strategies that is suitable for those with learning disabilities, dyslexics in specific [7][2]. Phonic is defined as a system that emphasizes on letter-sound correspondences along with word-recognition activities [8]. Phonetic Approach is proven as a natural way in learning to read [9] and it is recommended by the National Reading Panel in US as one of the key features of reading instructions [10]. Phonic reading is a systematic approach that decodes letter-sound pronunciations [9] by breaking words into 978-1-4673-4617-7/12/$31.00 ©2012 IEEE2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science & Engineering Research (CHUSER 2012), December 3-4, 2012, Kota Kinabalu,Sabah, Malaysia554
Jika anak memulai sekolah di Perth dalam usia yang ‘nanggung, yaitu usia-usia 5-6 tahun, akan muncul sedikit tantangan bagi ortu dalam upaya belajar mereka. Anak-anak dalam usia seperti ini pastilah sudah pernah mengenal huruf ABC dan mengejanya dalam bahasa Indonesia, tetapi belum benar-benar bisa membaca. Dengan cara pengucapan yang sangat berbeda, wah…anak-anak pasti mengalami kebingungan. Setahu dia, What You See is What You Say! heheheheh…in English, of course you cannot just say what you see!

Kiz Phonics is an excellent progressive program for teaching kids to read using a systematic phonics approach. The Kiz Phonics program is carefully arranged by levels from Preschool Ages 3-4, Kindergarten Ages 4 -6, 1st Grade Ages 6-7 & 2nd Grade Ages 7-8. It is suitable for school teachers, home-school parents and other educators trying to help children learn to read.

Spelling, including invented spelling, is an excellent way to instruct and reinforce letter-sound knowledge and phoneme awareness and to establish secure orthographic representations (sight words).  Teachers must provide corrective feedback to ensure the learning of accurate spelling in order to help establish those words in long-term memory for reading.

... Studies from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development have shown that by using multisensory approach, children with learning disabilities can do " learn-to-read " better [12]. Furthermore, using various type of teaching tools that harnesses the sensory strength of dyslexic children does not only makes the learning process more productive and effective, but also makes the children stay focused for long durations [7]. For case study purpose, Puryakhasta, et al. [12] implemented multisensory approach by employing various technologies like touch screens, accelerometers, gyroscopes, voice recognition, and sound reproduction. ...
Embedded phonics is the type of phonics instruction used in whole language programmes. Although phonics skills are de-emphasised in whole language programmes, some teachers include phonics "mini-lessons" in the context of literature. Short lessons are included based on phonics elements that students are having trouble with, or on a new or difficult phonics pattern that appears in a class reading assignment. The focus on meaning is generally maintained, but the mini-lesson provides some time for focus on individual sounds and the symbols that represent them. Embedded phonics differs from other methods in that the instruction is always in the context of literature rather than in separate lessons, and the skills to be taught are identified opportunistically rather than systematically.

Some educators feel there are words that do not follow these phonics rules, such as were, who, and you.[12] They are often called "sight words" because they are memorized by sight with the whole language approach. These words should not be placed on a Word Wall to avoid confusion for a student learning beginning sounds. However, teachers of Synthetic phonics believe that most words are decodable and do not need to be memorized. For example, they point out that the word "were" is decodable because it contains two sounds, /w/-/er/. It is only necessary for the student to learn the various ways of spelling the sounds.[13]
