Bijak Membaca - Applying Phonic Reading Technique and Multisensory Approach with Interactive Multimedia for Dyslexia Children Siti Zulaiha Ahmad, Nik Noor Amalina Amirah Nik Ludin, Hawa Mohd Ekhsan, Arifah Fasha Rosmani, Mohammad Hafiz Ismail Department of Computer Science Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences Universiti Teknologi MARA, 02600 Arau, Perlis Abstract— Reading difficulty is one of the major problems faced by dyslexic children. Reading skill is the most crucial ability as it is required in the upper level of discovery of knowledge. In this research, Phonic Reading Technique and Multisensory Approach are blended with interactive multimedia, which incorporates multimedia elements such as text, graphics, video, and animation. The manner of applying those techniques in “Bijak Membaca” is discussed. The contents of this application are specifically designed to visualize letters, words, sentences, and pronunciations in the Malay language for dyslexics, aged 7 – 8 years, with awareness of their characteristics. In order to evaluate the design of its content, heuristic testing is conducted among multimedia lecturers and IT undergraduates. The result reveals that the contents are well designed with the inclusion of Phonic Reading Technique, Multisensory Approach, and suitable multimedia elements. It is also concluded as interesting, user-friendly, attractive, valuable, and supportive. Keywords—Phonic reading; Multisensory Approach; Interactive multimedia; Dyslexic children; Heuristic testing I. INTRODUCTION The first step to explore the world of knowledge is by actively engaging in reading books, magazines, articles, and other materials. Unfortunately, children with learning disabilities, especially dyslexia, usually have problems in word recognition, which could hinder their ability to read [1]. They are usually hampered by slow reading speed, omission of words [2], and inaccurate reading [3]. Consequently, it causes inferiority complex, loss of confidence and focus, and frustration among these children [2]. In order to provide improved learning conditions for dyslexic children, an appropriate reading tool that attracts and captivates their attention is required to support their learning process. It is very important to motivate and integrate them in an enjoyable learning process. Therefore, dyslexic children need extra support [4] in terms of learning strategy to develop their skills in reading. There are many learning strategies and their effectiveness differs depending on the children themselves. From the previous research, it is found that by using existing teaching methods (traditional methods), teachers cannot get much success in teaching dyslexic children [5]. It is known that multimedia plays an important role in teaching children with dyslexia [4]. In this study, the Multisensory Approach and multimedia elements [6], such as video, audio, animation, graphic, and image, are used. This research concentrates on designing and developing a reading tool called “Bijak Membaca” to assist dyslexic children in the reading process. The idea is to provide a better learning strategy by applying the Phonic Reading Technique in Malay language, blended with the Multisensory Approach. These learning strategies are implemented using multimedia technology that is specifically designed for dyslexics aged 7 to 8 years. The rest of this section is organized as follows: the second section discusses the background of this study, which includes the Phonic Reading Technique, Multisensory Approach, dyslexia and multimedia. In the next section, the focus is on implementation of learning strategies in “Bijak Membaca”. The paper ends with disclosing results and findings obtained from heuristic testing. II. BACKGROUND A. Phonic Reading Technique Phonic skill is one of the learning strategies that is suitable for those with learning disabilities, dyslexics in specific [7][2]. Phonic is defined as a system that emphasizes on letter-sound correspondences along with word-recognition activities [8]. Phonetic Approach is proven as a natural way in learning to read [9] and it is recommended by the National Reading Panel in US as one of the key features of reading instructions [10]. Phonic reading is a systematic approach that decodes letter-sound pronunciations [9] by breaking words into 978-1-4673-4617-7/12/$31.00 ©2012 IEEE2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science & Engineering Research (CHUSER 2012), December 3-4, 2012, Kota Kinabalu,Sabah, Malaysia554
Kim Burnim: It’s called decoding because you can think of the letters as a code that you have to figure out in order to know what the word is. So when you are decoding, you are looking at a written word and using a knowledge of phonics (sounds of the letters) to say the word correctly. For example, if a child sees the letters m-a-p together in a word, and knows the sounds that the letters m, a, and p stand for, then he or she can blend those three sounds together to say the word “map.”
As well as working through the alphabet, and the sounds that each letter makes, Reading Eggs also includes lessons on phonics skills such as working with beginning and end blends of letters, the variety of sounds that vowels make, diphthongs, consonant letter sounds such as soft c, g, and y, silent letters, double letter sounds, word families, and how to work through words with more than one syllable.

Once students grasp the alphabet, and know the sound each letter represents they continue on to blend these letter-sound pairings together to read a word. They can then distinguish between similar sounds (e.g. “three,” “free,” and “tree), and phonics success is just around the corner. An effective homeschool phonics curriculum will involve frequent reinforcement and review of these skills.

In 2017, research published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology has shown that learning to read by sounding out words (i.e. phonics) has a dramatic impact on the accuracy of reading aloud and comprehension. [34] It concludes that early literacy education should focus on the systematic approach in "print-to-sound relationships" in alphabetic languages, rather than teaching "meaning-based strategies", in order to enhance both reading aloud and comprehension of written words.
Modal saya cuma 1, yaitu buku magic ini: “The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading” dan sekarang untuk yang non native seperti kita nih WNI, sudah tersedia versi audionya, jadi lebih mudah lagi ngajarnya kan :-). Nah, kenapa saya bilang magic? karena bukunya benar-benar super simple untuk non native seperti saya dan bukan guru beneran yang nggak pernah sekolah PG 🙂 but I can successfully teach my kids how to read, write and speak in English!
English has absorbed many words from other languages throughout its history, usually without changing the spelling of those words. As a result, the written form of English includes the spelling patterns of many languages (Old English, Old Norse, Norman French, Classical Latin and Greek, as well as numerous modern languages) superimposed upon one another.[7] These overlapping spelling patterns mean that in many cases the same sound can be spelled differently and the same spelling can represent different sounds. However, the spelling patterns usually follow certain conventions.[8] In addition, the Great Vowel Shift, a historical linguistic process in which the quality of many vowels in English changed while the spelling remained as it was, greatly diminished the transparency of English spelling in relation to pronunciation.

Analogy phonics is a particular type of analytic phonics in which the teacher has students analyze phonic elements according to the phonogrammes in the word. A phonogramme, known in linguistics as a rime, is composed of the vowel and all the sounds that follow it in the syllable. Teachers using the analogy method assist students in memorising a bank of phonogrammes, such as -at or -am. Teachers may use learning "word families" when teaching about phonogrammes. Students then use these phonogrammes.
Phonics curriculum usually starts with teaching letters, slowly creating a working knowledge of the alphabet. Children learn the sounds of each letter by associating it with the word that starts with that sound. Phonics skills grow through reading activities, and students learn to distinguish between vowels and consonants and understand letter combinations such as blends and digraphs.
Most poor readers tend to rely so heavily on one reading strategy, such as the use of context and picture clues, that they exclude other strategies that might be more appropriate. To become skilled, fluent readers, children need to have a repertoire of strategies to draw on. These strategies include using a knowledge of sound-spelling relationships — in other words, an understanding of phonics. In addition, research has shown that skilled readers attend to almost every word in a sentence and process the letters that compose each of these words.

A common tool for teaching the alphabet is alphabet key words, such as Aa is for apple, Bb is for ball, and so on. The idea is to make alphabet learning easier by creating meaningful associations between the letter and a word that begins with that letter. Unfortunately, too often, alphabet key words are problematic, creating more confusion than clarity for young children. Good alphabet key words need to begin with one of the sounds commonly associated with that letter. For example, Oo is for octopus works—the first sound in octopus is the short o sound. However, Oo is for orange does not work. The o in orange is what we call an r-controlled vowel. It does not make its typical short or long vowel sound. Similarly, Tt is for thumb does not work because there is no /t/ sound in thumb—there is a th digraph (two letters representing one sound). Another pitfall to watch out for is an alphabet key word that begins with a letter name, which can be really confusing to children. For example, Ee is for elephant is confusing because it begins the letter name for Ll (“el”), and Cc is for cake is problematic because it begins with the letter name for Kk (“kay”).
Jika anak memulai sekolah di Perth dalam usia yang ‘nanggung, yaitu usia-usia 5-6 tahun, akan muncul sedikit tantangan bagi ortu dalam upaya belajar mereka. Anak-anak dalam usia seperti ini pastilah sudah pernah mengenal huruf ABC dan mengejanya dalam bahasa Indonesia, tetapi belum benar-benar bisa membaca. Dengan cara pengucapan yang sangat berbeda, wah…anak-anak pasti mengalami kebingungan. Setahu dia, What You See is What You Say! heheheheh…in English, of course you cannot just say what you see!

This helps the kids to survive!
SAYA BINGUNG DAN SULIT UNTUK MENGERTI APA YANG MOM DEASI SHARING, Bear with me ya,... Tahan dulu binggungnya... Kita binggung karena memang nggak tahu jadi nggak bisa menidentifikasi, mau nggak binggung lagi? Baca terus... Siapa yang nggak mau Ramadan yang positif? Kita semua kan berusaha untuk itu 😉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tapi realitanya banyak di antara sisters kita yang tidak punya pengalaman Ramadan yang positif bahkan selama bertahun-tahun. Hurtful truth rite? Termasuk juga ada yang nggak punya sama sekali. Tapi,… Siapa juga mau ngomongin tentang hal ini Taboo? Sesuatu untuk disembunyikan Jangan diomongin No one wants to talk about it. So far so good kalau kata orang kita. Kayak gini nih seringnya (contoh nyata) Saya: Apa kabarmu? Teman: Alhamdulillah! Saya: Kamu tuh belum jawab tanya saya, saya tahu, kamu bilang All Praise is due to Allah, that's great MashaAllah!, tapi saya kan tanya, gimana kabarmu. Teman: baik-baik saja Saya: ru sure?
